How to Clean Your Couch

Couches are wonderful parts of our home – comfortable, supportive,
and always there when you need it. As much as we love our cushy replacements
for a significant other, they tend to get incredibly dirty if we take
too long to clean them. Here are a few easy ways to keep them fresh and
ready for your next binge watching session.
-
Figure Out What’s Safe To Use On The Fabric: Nothing’s worse than starting a clean, only to realize that even
a single drop of water will ruin your couch. Every couch has a tag that
indicates what’s safe to use. The basic codes used are:
-
X: Vacuum only.
-
W: Water is fine to use.
-
S: Dry cleaner detergent only.
-
WS: Mild detergent with dry cleaner detergent or steam vacuum.
-
Vacuum: It’s a bit cumbersome to use a full-sized floor vacuum on your couch,
so now’s the perfect time to break out those handy attachments included
in the box that you always wonder about. Take the time to hit every nook
and cranny to collect as much dust and debris as you can, and if the cushions
can be removed, then do so to give yourself better access. If you have
pets, you’ll want to use a lint roller to collect their hair.
-
Clean Any Wood or Metal Bits: Use a combination of dish soap and warm water to wipe down these non-fabric
areas, which will just be the legs and feet of most couches.
-
Remove Stains: If you don’t have any commercial cleaners at the ready, you can
always mix your own with some ingredients laying around your kitchen.
-
Synthetic Upholstery: 1 cup warm water, ½ cup vinegar, ½ tablespoon of liquid
dish soap. Mix these ingredients together in a spray bottle, spray the
areas in question, and scrub with a soft cloth until satisfied.
-
Leather Upholstery: ¼ cup vinegar, ½ cup olive oil. Mix these ingredients together
in a spray bottle, and gently scrub with a soft cloth until satisfied.
-
Fabric Upholstery: 2/4 cup warm water, ¼ cup vinegar, 1 tablespoon dish soap. Mix
these ingredients together in a spray bottle spray the areas in question,
and scrub with a soft cloth until satisfied. Use a second lightly damp
towel to wipe away any excess soap and use a towel to dry it off.
-
Give It Time To Dry: Use a dry towel to pat down any excess moisture before letting it air dry.
If you live in a particularly humid location, you may want to point a
fan in the direction of your couch to help it along in order to prevent
any mildew.
